As you know I've had somewhat of a rough year. It started in January with a diagnosis of Diabetes. It all started going down hill from there with Anemia, Ovarian Cyst, and of course Breast Cancer. Here is how that all started...
On June 16th, 2006 I went for a diagnostic mammogram. It was ordered by my doctor who felt a lump in my right breast. I felt it just prior to the appointment and brought it to her attention.
The Radiologist came into the room and told me she needed to do an ultrasound because an abnormality was found. After the ultrasound was done she came back in the room and said... "I'm afraid I don't have very good news for you, you have cancer." She called my doctor who called a breast surgeon. I compiled all of my past medical records that following Monday. Tuesday was the appointment with the breast surgeon.
June 20th - The breast surgeon felt there was cause for concern so she did a fine needle aspiration. The next day the result showed abnormal cells so a tissue (core needle) biopsy was ordered. On June 23rd the biopsy was done and than the waiting period.
June 28th - I was called and told I had Invasive Ductal Carcinoma and that the doctor was going to order a bone scan, muga scan, mri, chest ct scan, and blood work. We waited for all the results. In the meantime I met with the Oncologist who scheduled my first chemo treatment.
The day before chemo was to start I received a call from the surgeon who told me that the MRI scan showed that the tumor was smaller than the ultrasound and clinical palpation showed. There were however other areas that seemed concerning. The doctors decided to do a biopsy on the two other areas before proceeding. I completed them and both showed benign findings. Best news I had gotten in weeks. Surgery was scheduled for a lumpectomy and biopsy of two lymph nodes.
August 16th - Surgery, I was admitted to the hospital to stay over night. The next day the surgeon came in and discussed the surgery with me. The tumor was bigger than the 2cm that the MRI showed. She also said that the two lymph nodes that were sampled had cancer in them. She proceeded to clean out any that looked suspect, took out the tumor and surrounding tissue, and put in a port. One area that she felt was questionable was also sampled and it showed cancer cells as well. So, she knew at that point that she didn't get all of the cancer out.
As of today, August 18th I'm waiting for the pathology report and the drain to be removed. This will happen over the next week.
August 31st is my new scheduled chemo treatment.
